If you live in Horizon West, you already know that Ficquette, Reams, and Avalon Roads have trouble at times, keeping up with the explosive growth in West Orange County. The good news? Orange County is finally moving from “planning” to actual construction, with multiple major road projects either underway or about to break ground. Here’s what’s happening, what’s coming next, and why it matters for local homeowners and future buyers.
The county’s current focus areas include Ficquette Road, Reams Road, Flemings Road extension, and New Independence Parkway.
Here are the key takeaways from the Hoodline Story
Connecting Lake and Orange Counties: Clermonters Rejoice!
- Flemings Road (Segments 5 & 6) is already under construction, upgrading a two-lane rural road into a four-lane divided corridor.
- The Flemings project will include a 10-foot multiuse path, sidewalks, and intersection improvements at CR 545 and Western Way, with completion projected for early 2027.
- Orange County is also building a new four-lane section of New Independence Parkway to connect from east of CR 545 (Avalon Road) to Wellness Way near the Lake County line.
- The New Independence extension will include 10-foot multiuse paths on both sides and drainage improvements.
Ficquette/Reams: IFKYK
- Ficquette Road widening is expected to begin in the coming weeks, expanding from two lanes to four lanes.
- The Ficquette project will also straighten an S-curve and replace the congested Reams/Summerlake/Ficquette traffic signal with a roundabout.
- Ficquette traffic has grown significantly, increasing from about 17,000 vehicles/day (2019) to 22,000+ vehicles/day today.
- The Reams Road improvement project is currently in the right-of-way acquisition phase and will widen about 2.8 miles between Summerlake Park Blvd and Taborfield Ave.
- Reams Road plans include a raised median, shared-use path, a new bridge, wildlife crossings, and upgraded lighting/landscaping.
County leaders say these projects are designed not just for cars, but also for safer walking and biking, with pedestrian and cyclist safety built into the plans. Construction will roll out in phases over the next two years, and residents should expect lane closures, detours, and ongoing updates through Orange County’s project dashboard.
For buyers, these projects are a big deal — road improvements can impact commute times, neighborhood accessibility, and long-term desirability. For current residents, it’s a sign that the county is finally responding to how fast Horizon West has grown. Construction will come with some temporary inconvenience, but the long-term goal is smoother traffic flow, safer walking and biking routes, and stronger connections into Lake County!
